is sponsoring two six-week courses in philosophy, to be held in Savitri Bhavan
Saturday mornings from Dec. 1 through Jan. 5,
1) CRITICAL THINKING: MODERN SYMBOLIC LOGIC, presented by Shivi Elambooranan, Ph.D. 9:30-10:45
This course is an introduction to the elements of Modern Symbolic Logic, and covers material up to and including Truth Functional Logic (method of deduction). In the last week, we will look at some common deductive fallacies.
Why Study Logic?Logic can be compared with riding a bicycle. Most people can ride a bicycle. Some do it very well. But almost all are ignorant of the mechanics, the physics, and the biology of riding a bicycle. Likewise, almost all people reason poorly or well according to their ability. The study of Logic can teach one the rules of correct reasoning, as well as incorrect reasoning. This enables the student of logic to reason correctly, avoiding bad reasoning both on her own part and seeing it when others reason incorrectly.

2) THE PHILOSOPHY OF EVOLUTION (3): MIND AND SUPERMIND, presented by Rod Hemsell 11-12:15
This course will summarize the content covered in series one and two (2008, 2009: from logic to intuition) and then follow up with a more detailed exploration of the study of mind in the works of Gregory Bateson, Henri Bergson, A.N. Whitehead, the post-modernist philosopher most influenced by Bergson, Gilles Deleuze, and more recent developments in cognitive science, all viewed in relation to the theory of Supermind.
Shivi is simultaneously starting a more lengthy version of his course in the Ashram school, and he has worked with SACAR for several years.
